In September 2015 the Cathedral remember Ernest Bird, a fallen chorister. Exactly 100-years later after his death, Wild Men brings Ernest and his fellow choristers to life in the second working of the show.

ANNOUNCEMENT: WILD MEN ROUND II

WILD MEN ROUND II.

Tickets Available Now – See Link Below.

Whilst that might sound like a strange wrestling match you’d find in fight club, we promise this is still, essentially, the same show. Apart from this time, we’re collaborating with the Bristol Cathedral.

Wild Men, is the story of 4 ex-choristers from Bristol Cathedral who travel to France to fight. Whilst the core themes of the show are staying the same, it is changing quite a bit – We’re moving it forward so we begin in France, the cast number has gone from 9-6 and this time, we have a choir.

Collaborating with the Bristol Cathedral has really opened up the possibilities of this show and we’re able to do things now that wouldn’t have been possible in our original black box space. We’re performing in the beautiful Cathedral itself, and even more excitingly we have the use of the Bristol Cathedral Choristers.

We’ve already begun R and D (Research and development) with the choir members – Below are some images …

“In a quiet corner of Bristol Cathedral is a plaque listing eight names. This memorial stands in recognition of the Cathedral’s own choristers who fought and died in World War One. One hundred years later, the plaque was the inspiration for Hotel Echo, a young theatre company affiliated with Bristol Old Vic’s Made In Bristol programme, who devised a piece imagining their stories. After successful performances at Bristol Old Vic and on tour, the production is in the process of being redeveloped in order to be performed exclusively in Bristol Cathedral, with the collaboration of the current Bristol Cathedral choristers.”

Wild Men prepare themselves for battle

IMG_3503

With 2 weeks to go ‘Wild Men’ is taking shape. We’re currently rehearsing 10-5pm every week day in order to get our boots spick and span and ready for the Bristol Old Vic run! Thankfully as the weather’s not been too kind lately, it hasn’t been difficult to become wrapped up in the world of the play, spending our lives in the rehearsal room at the Bristol Old Vic diligently compiling a story of masculinity, loss and beauty next door to World Cup Final 1966 and, for some time, The Libertine. Although beauty might not be the first word to would pop into your mind if visiting our rehearsal room! Each morning starts with a fitness drill; this morning’s consisting of 100 sit ups, 75 crunches, 40 bicycles and a 1 minute 45 plank. We’ve built ourselves up over the last few weeks, slowly but surely, to ready ourselves for war. This is usually followed by our favourite game of Ninja and then straight onto devising/rehearsing. Afternoon is singing drills; with each company member, soldier and chorister alike, practicing breathing and pitching. We have a wonderful musical director, Verity Standen, who leading our singing and teaching us some incredible original Choral pieces which soon will be filling the studio! If you fancy seeing what all the hard work comes down to, book yourself a ticket and come join us in two weeks’ time at the Bristol Old Vic.

The night was arranged to raise money to tour our debut show ‘Wild Men’ to Scotland in July. This is an amazing opportunity however will cost a lot of money to get there. We managed to raise a whopping £200 during our event and we are extremely thankful for everybody who attended and donated.

The evening was extremely successful and the feedback from the night has been brilliant! We hope to see you all at the next one!

Wild Men… Who Caught And Sang The Sun In Flight

After much deliberation, experimentation and research; there was very clearly an idea which grabbed our attention far more than others:

‘Wild Men’

Wild Men is the story of a group of young ex-Choristers who, in a daze of excitement and hope of adventure, go to fight in World War One along with the 65 million men who fought at that time. It’s a story of growing up, fearing and facing the unknown and dealing with loss.

The story will be devised by the company over the course of 8 weeks which will come to a conclusion not only the Bristol Old Vic studio in June, but at the Tin Forest Festival held in Glasgow in July.

Our first week of intensive rehearsals have passed and some interesting characters and story lines are already appearing. Not only have we discovered more about the characters we’ll be creating but we’ve looked at many different styles and techniques throughout the week ranging from writing tasks to stage combat.

In the next few weeks we’ll continue to bring the story together and discover what exactly our characters have to face, and how, if ever, they overcome their fears.

Sally Cookson Visits Hotel Echo

It was an absolute pleasure in mid October to have Sally Cookson lead us for two fun packed and enlightening days of research and development on her show ‘Jane Eyre’. Sally Cookson is a professional director who has directed many very successful shows at the Bristol Old Vic including Peter Pan, Treasure Island and The Boy Who Cried Wolf

During our workshops with her for Jane Eyre we focused on the beginning of the story: the birth of Jane and the tragic death of her parents and uncle. We tried and tested many ideas, being playful in our exploration.

Some of Hotel Echo practically exploring how to show Jane’s father dying gradually from illness.

Sally has a distinctive style of directing which leaves much room for her actors to share a creative input on the show. We felt privileged to have worked with Sally and have definitely been inspired by her ability to create excellent work in such a welcoming rehearsal environment. We very much look forward to welcoming Sally back into Hotel Echo later this year and hearing her thoughts on our own show.

There are still tickets available for ‘Jane Eyre’ and it isn’t something to miss! The show is truly beautiful and keeps you gripped throughout with its use of live music, ensemble work and honesty in its story telling.
